- Check vocalist's comfortable key range
- Identify form and structure
Phase 2: Reharmonization
- Convert basic chords to jazz 7ths
- Insert ii-V-I progressions
- Add chromatic passing chords
- Apply tritone substitutions where appropriate
Phase 3: Instrument Parts
- Vocals: Transpose melody, mark phrasing
- Keyboard: Create voicings, comping rhythm, intro/outro
- Bass: Write walking bass line
- Saxophone: Transpose for instrument, suggest fills
- Guitar: Simplify to shell voicings, rhythm pattern
Phase 4: Arrangement Form
INTRO → HEAD → SOLOS → SHOUT → HEAD OUT → OUTRO
Coordination Rules
For the Rhythm Section
- Bass and guitar must lock together
- Piano comps around bass, not over it
- Everyone listens to drums (beats 2 & 4)
For Soloists
- Clear solo order established
- Background figures support, don't compete
- Trading 4s or 8s for energy
For Dynamics
- Build through the arrangement
- Clear contrasts between sections
- Save full volume for climax
